The Truth About Meal Frequency: Is Intermittent Fasting for You?

I know this is a deviation from my normal subject matter, but I feel pretty strongly about this. Whenever there is a discussion about diet plans and someone mentions intermittent fasting (IF), there is always a person in the room who starts going on and on about how you must eat multiple meals a day or else your body will go into starvation mode and you will never lose weight. This concept has been drilled into our heads for years, but recent research has proven the opposite.

In this short and to the point article, by Tyler Simmons, explains in simple terms why intermittent fasting may just be right for you.

Recent research has shown that Intermittent Fasting or reduced meal frequency can convey many of the benefits of Caloric Restriction (CR) while avoiding the negative side effects. Some of these benefits include:

  • Favorable changes to blood lipids
  • Reduced blood pressure
  • Decreased markers of inflammation
  • Reduction in oxidative stress
  • Increased Growth Hormone release
  • Greater thermogenesis/elevated metabolic rate
  • Improved fat burning
  • Improved appetite control

The danger of internet fitness authorities

The training videos referenced in this post have all been removed from YouTube. I can’t take credit for anything, but I would like to believe that this post at least played a small part in that.

There is no arguing that the internet has changed the way and speed at which information is spread. Anyone can create a website, a blog, or upload all the videos they want to YouTube. This content is instantly available to millions of people around the globe. The problem lies in the fact that as a reader, we don’t always know who is behind the content we encounter on the web. Anyone can claim to be an expert and put out information that may be read by thousands, if not millions of people. This information may be completely false, and in some cases, outright hazardous to those reading it.

While browsing a fitness related discussion forum, I came across a series of YouTube videos containing exercise demonstrations, aimed at promoting a training website. The video quality was better than your average YouTube video and they looked somewhat professional at first glance. It only took a few seconds of viewing to realize that the creators of these videos have no idea what they are doing. The exercise form being demonstrated was some of the worst I have ever seen. Some of the clips are so bad that they can be mistaken for humorous spoofs of actual fitness videos.

When YouTube comments starting flooding in about the videos and pointing out their flaws, they were immediately deleted and eventually commenting was disabled completely for just about every video on their channel. No explanation, or reply was ever given. They just removed all comments. The YouTube channel makes no mention of the credentials of, Jonny and Rhiann, the so-called “trainers” who are the stars of the videos.

Welcome to the judgement zone

By now, I’m sure most people have seen the line of Planet Fitness commercials. You know, the ones where they embrace hypocrisy to the fullest and promote their “Judgment Free Zone”, while judging people in the process. The hardcore bodybuilding and powerlifting communities around the web have been up in arms about them for a while now, but now I’m even seeing the average Planet Fitness member questioning their advertising tactics. What Planet Fitness is trying to do is create an environment that is comfortable for the average person who walks into their gym. Take a look at their mission statement.
